Sid Tavolaro

Instructor, All Levels

Background

Sid Tavolaro is a rising force in no-gi jiu jitsu, known for his unwavering confidence and relentless pursuit of the submission. A brown belt under Greg Souders at Standard Jiu Jitsu, Tavolaro brings nearly 15 years of martial arts experience to both the mat and the classroom.

At just 19 years old, Tavolaro has already compiled a competitive resume that most athletes spend a decade chasing. He claimed gold in the under 70kg division at both the ADCC Niagara Open and ADCC Toronto Open in 2024 and 2025, submitting all three of his opponents in each tournament.

At the 2024 IBJJF Purple Belt World Championships, he tore through his bracket with six matches and six submissions. His run at the 2024 AIGA Champions League USA Qualifier was equally dominant, finishing Tyler Brown and Gustavo Lopes with first-round submissions.

Coaching & Philosophy

Before coaching at Standard, Tavolaro played a pivotal role in youth development at Finishers MMA/10th Planet Bethlehem under Zach Maslany, as well as at Cochabamba Jiu Jitsu in the DMV. His approach to skill acquisition is shaped by the constraints-led approach (CLA), which prioritizes live, game-based scenarios as the basis of skill development.

Today, Tavolaro is not just chasing gold medals. He's building something. As a coach and competitor based in Rockville, Maryland, he's helping Standard Jiu Jitsu evolve into one of the most forward-thinking no-gi programs in the world. Technically sharp, strategically adaptable, and grounded in a modern coaching philosophy, Sid Tavolaro represents the new generation of grappling.
